Tra le band più creative e talentuose della scena inglese, tra art-pop e ‘performance orchestra’, guidati dal carismatico Jamie McDermott, The Irrepressibles sono pronti a tornare con ‘Superheroes’, il terzo album in arrivo il 29 maggio via Of Naked Design. Anticipato dal brano ‘Let Go (Everybody Move Your Body, Listen To Your Heart)’, il nuovo disco racchiude l’essenza prog e kraut-rock che da sempre contraddistingue la band, arricchita da elementi di elettronica frutto dell’influenza degli ultimi mesi di Jamie trascorsi a Berlino.
Pubblicato il 19 marzo, ‘Let Go (Everybody Move Your Body, Listen To Your Heart)’ ha raggiunto oltre i 20.000 ascolti Spotify in solo due settimane e conquistato prestigiosi media internazionali, da Clash Music a The Independent, da KALTBLUT fino al The Guardian. Tra pop d’avanguardia ed elettronica, il brano è un’ottima anticipazione del nuovo album in arrivo a fine maggio e mostra, ancora una volta, la capacità di Jamie a muoversi in più universi sonori, con un approccio trasversale che, dalla musica, lo porta fino all’arte.
Incentrato sul processo di accettazione, riguardo al brano Jamie dichiara: 'Let Go is a story of a man who starts out feeling in himself that sexuality itself must be binary. That he must find the opposite of himself. But he listens to his heart and body and discovers the drive within himself that he can be with someone who is the same gender. It is about listening to your heart and body and what it tells you to set you free.'

Attivi dal 2002 e guidati dal carismatico Jamie McDermott, con influenze sonore che spaziano da Phil Spector, ai maestri del Doo-wop The Flamingos, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Neil Young, Elettronica Giapponese e Abba, fino alle più recenti derive elettroniche che riportano a Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream e Peaches, The Irrepressibles sono una band in continua evoluzione, tra barocchismo pop, essenzialità arty, ed extravaganza art-rock.
Autore delle canzoni e voce solista dal falsetto sfarzoso ed eclatante, McDermott è soprattutto l’inventore di una formula spettacolare in cui le sue canzoni – un ardente impasto emotivo di rabbia, amore, melanconia e vitalità – sono il punto di partenza per una creazione più articolata dove gli strumenti tradizionali del pop – chitarre, percussioni e tastiere – sono sopraffatti da quelli classici come archi, contrabbasso, violino, fiati e clarinetto inglese. Il risultato sonoro è unico e spregiudicato. Ad esso si aggiunge un corredo di scenografie, luci, costumi, make up e movimenti coreografici studiati con fantasia ed accuratezza. Ne emerge una teatralità barocca, circense e flamboyant, guidata dalla voce sensuale, vellutata, ossessiva, disperata ed onirica di McDermott. Non è dunque casuale che molti brani siano poi divenuti anche installazioni musicali dal vivo, come è il caso di “The Human Box” commissionato dal Victoria and Albert Museum.
Nel lavoro dei The Irrepressibles scorre infatti quel sangue dell’art-rock, che dagli anni ’60 in poi ha attraversato come un fiume carsico la scena musicale, da Andy Wahrol e i Velvet Underground, via David Bowie e Kate Bush, passando per i travestimenti di Peter Gabriel, giù giù fino agli attuali Antony and the Johnson. Tra i fan della band, boy George, Joanna Lumley, Philip Tracey, Bill Drummond (KLF), Dermot O’Leary, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
McDermott è anche il creatore di Conversations with Sound, collettivo tra musica ed installazioni, e compositore di colonne sonore per film ed opera.
