Scritto per la maggior parte a New York tra l’estate 2016 e l’inverno 2017, il quarto album di Josh Tillman nelle vesti di Father John Misty, intitolato God’s Favorite Customer, riflette sull’esperienza di essere intrappolati tra lo strazio vertiginoso e le fitte frenetiche di libertà.

God’s Favorite Customer rivela una schiettezza amara nella composizione di Tillman, senza sacrificare il suo umorismo e il suo gusto per l’assurdo. Da “Mr Tillman”, dove si concentra sulle sue disavventure, passando per il dolore da separazione di “Please Don’t Die”, Tillman gioca con la prospettiva, con effetti sia divertenti che devastanti. “We’re Only People (And There’s Not Much Anyone Can Do About That)” è un inno meditativo alle nostre vite interiori e i limiti che viviamo quando tentiamo di dare o ricevere amore. La title track esamina proprio la relazione ironica tra il perdono e il peccato. Tutte le canzoni di questo album pretendono di conoscere o il vero amore, o ciò che viene dopo e nel corso dell’album questa supplica conduce alla scoperta dell’ultima vera posta in gioco.

Prodotto da Tillman, God’s Favorite Customer è stato registrato con la partecipazione di Jonathan Rado, Dave Cerminara e Trevor Spencer. L’album vede la collaborazione di Haxan Cloak, Natalie Merring of Weyes Blood, Jonathan Wilson e i membri della tour band Misty.
