Oggi, a meno di due mesi dall'ultima data del loro As Long As You Are tour, i Future Islands annunciano il loro nuovo album People Who Aren't There Anymore, che uscirà il 26 gennaio 2024. Il settimo album della band - Samuel T. Herring (voce, testi), William Cashion (basso, chitarre), Gerrit Welmers (tastiere, programmazione) e Michael Lowry (batteria) - segue As Long As You Are del 2020. People Who Aren't There Anymore inaugura un nuovo capitolo per i Future Islands che, nonostante si siano formati quasi due decenni fa, continuano a sfidare se stessi.

Se in passato hanno sempre tirato fuori inni energetici, questa volta hanno deciso di guardarsi dentro e raggiungendo un nuovo livello di vitalità, realizzando alcuni dei loro brani più ispirati e più strazianti, prendendosi il loro tempo, facendo contare ogni respiro, ogni sillaba, ogni colpo di piatti. Il risultato è un'affermazione potente e decisiva di un gruppo di musicisti che ha realizzato il miglior album della sua carriera.

Insieme all'annuncio, la band ha condiviso un nuovo singolo tratto dall'album, "The Tower", insieme a un video diretto da Jonathan van Tulleken (Top Boy, Shogun). Questo è il secondo progetto a cui van Tulleken e Herring lavorano insieme: i due hanno collaborato a The Changeling di Apple TV, la cui prima stagione è andata in onda a settembre. A proposito della collaborazione con Herring per lo show e per il video di "The Tower", van Tulleken ha dichiarato:

“Anyone who’s seen Sam on stage shape shift with his whole body and voice from heart wrenchingly tender to fantastically ferocious knows that he is a truly, magnetic, performer. This was no small reason why he was cast for a role in The Changeling where he plays a complex character who appears to be one thing whilst actually another. It was a role that would be no easy task for even the most seasoned actor but Sam, applying all his stage craft, charisma, smarts and natural empathy, absolutely nailed it producing a riveting performance. I loved working with someone who came to acting via this persona they had built in their music. To then get to collaborate on a music video with the band was a delight, especially one which explores that duality of light and dark literally and metaphorically. Finding that same captivating, haunting, performance but this time with the track as script.” 

‘The Tower’ segue i singoli precedenti ‘Deep In The Night’, ‘King of Sweden’ e ‘Peach’, che saranno contenuti anch'essi in People Who Aren’t There Anymore.

People Who Aren’t There Anymore  è stato co-prodotto dai Future Islands e Steve Wright, e mixato da Steve Wright e Chris Coady (che torna a lavorare con la band dopo Singles del 2014)

People Who Aren't There Anymore uscirà il 26 gennaio 2024 e sarà disponibile in formato digitale, su CD e cassetta e su vinile con retro standard, vinile trasparente e vinile giallo e nero con artwork alternativo (esclusiva 4AD/D2C).
