Tra gli artisti islandesi di maggior successo, Ásgeir ha trascorso il tempo tra il suo debutto da record (che quest'anno celebra il suo decimo anniversario) ed oggi spingendo i confini del suo marchio folk-pop strutturato e ponderato. E' in arrivo il 28 ottobre il tanto atteso quarto album, 'Time On My Hands', sempre su etichetta One Little Independent Records, che lo pubblica sin dagli esordi.

Dopo le precedenti anticipazioni – 'Snowblind', 'Limitless' e 'Like I Am' - Ásgeir pubblica oggi 'Borderland', il nuovo singolo ricco di atmosfere vibranti e voci elevate. Il brano, come l'intero album, è una richiesta al lasciarci scivolare oltre i confini, sia quelli fisici sia quelli tra realtà ed immaginazione. 'Time On My Hands' parla infatti di libertà e voglia di avventura per fuggire all'isolamento, oltre ad apprezzare le meraviglie della natura che ci circondano ogni giorno.

“'Borderland' è stato l'ultimo brano ad essere inserito nell'album ed è nato in modo abbastanza spontaneo. Stavo suonando su un vecchio Memory Moog in studio ed ho creato un loop di sintetizzatori e drum machine, per poi improvvisare alcune melodie. Ho poi chiesto a mio padre di scrivere alcune parole sul layout delle musiche che avevo costruito e lui mi ha inviato subito un testo in islande - 'á Milli svefns og vöku” - che significa tra la veglia ed il sonno. Il testo parla di un uomo che si trova tra l'essere sveglio ed addormentato, sognando di essere sulla strada per il paradiso, per incontrare il suo amante. In questo stato allucinatorio, può sentire la sua voce parlare e cantare, ma si sveglia sempre prima di raggiungerla. Questo stato è spesso collegato ad una maggiore creatività” afferma Ásgeir.

'Time On My Hands' vede Ásgeir in uno stato di auto-riflessione e sperimentazione, avendo trascorso gli ultimi anni nel proprio studio in casa, profondamente assorbito dalla scrittura e dalla registrazione, dalla traduzione e dalla produzione. Nel nuovo album l'artista è entrato in nuovi regni della composizione, sovrapponendo l'acustica con l'elettronica e gli ottoni. Come in alcuni dei suoi precedenti lavori - in particolare 'Afterglow' del 2017 e 'Bury The Moon' del 2020 - Ásgeir mescola abilmente elementi corali della musica pop elettronica con uno stile più introspettivo, vocale ed acustico.

Sin dall'inizio si percepisce che 'Time On My Hands' attraversa paesaggi glaciali mentre Ásgeir si libra su un terreno di incantevoli paesaggi sonori e cinematografici, ispirati dagli ascolti degli ultimi anni, come afferma lo stesso artista: “some of the albums or music that stand out from that time were Caribou’s album Suddenly, Caroline Polichek-Pang, Dijon, Altopalo, Big Thief, Michael Kiwanuka, Sault, Ethan Gruska, Blake Mills and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. This music probably has something to do with how the record came out, combined with earlier influences.”

Il tempo trascorso a lavorare sul materiale ha dato ad Ásgeir la possibilità di avventurarsi in diversi suoni di synth: “There’s a synth repair guy that works at the studio and there’s a lot of vintage synthesizers that come through there. We bought an old Memorymoog off him while recording the album and I used it on many of the songs. I wrote Vibrating Walls on a Korg PS-3100. Korg Delta has always been one of my favourite synths and it was used on a few tracks. I use my voice as the bass sound in Golden Hour, I got the idea after listening to Rank and File by Moses Sumney”.

'Time On My Hands' è stato registrato a Studio Hljóðritm, dove Ásgeir ha sempre lavorato, a stretto contatto con il produttore Guðmundur Kristinn Jónsson. La maggior parte degli strumenti sono suonati dallo stesso Ásgeir, con il supporto di batteristi come Nils Törnqvist e Kristinn Snær Agnarson, il tiro di bassisti Samúel Jón Samúelsson, Kjartan Hákonarson e Óskar Guðjónsson, così come Pétur Ben alle percussioni.
